Hey all.  I know some of you are writers (HUZZAH TO WRITERS!) and so this is the place to come and talk about just that.  Hopefully we can learn from each other and have a blast talking about something that means a lot to us.
For a starter question:  Why do you write?
It's harder to answer than it looks.
Sarah

let me be the first to write:

Well... lets see. Why do I write. Um, that is hard. I kinda started writing because my sister does it, my mom can edit lots of stuff, it was pretty much in my blood.
I started writing like little things like short short stories and I guess then I got into writing and thought of writing a book! Sometimes I write cause I'm bored, but I truly love to write.
I hope some day something of mine can be published.
I also like different kinds of writing. Like, letters, stories, blogs (even though I don't have one), emails, etc things. They all seem like real writing to me.

Ah, some questions to float around.

I need a mystery person. But I don't wanna give away my story. So, by the names and who they are to the main person, who do you think should be the mystery person who is making these strange things happen? I think I know who, but I just wanna give you the names. the main person name is Taylor.

Staten - nephew-in-law and best friend

Corrine - one of Taylor's best friend

Tim - another best friend

Stephanie - Sister-in-law

Caleb - Brother

Sam - Father, Taylor thinks his a jerk though...

Vanessa - Mother though Taylor thinks she was dead.

Who do you think? Kinda dumb question though since you don't know what they act like.

Well-thought answer, Sarah. I'll say mine after some others have said theirs.
About the mystery person... well, obviously, you need suspects, and they can be anyone. But I don't know; I'm thinking Vanessa or Staten... whatever your heart tells you lol

Haha. Funny, considering I don't "know" them like I'm sure you do. One of the best parts of writing for me is getting to know your characters.

I love writing because you can escape into someone else's (or something) life, in which you draw the lines and make the paths. You control it but sometimes you surprise yourself in ways you never imagined, even though you're the one writing it. Creative writing takes imagination, creativity(well obviously), vocabulary, and experiences from your own life.

Reply
1/26/2011 08:11:14 am

I know exactly what you mean!!! It's a whole other life, in fact a bunch of lives, and you can shape them... but the surprising thing is so amazing!
I have so many reasons... writing is just such a part of me, it always has been. My mind makes up stories and sometimes I see people as characters. I do believe anyone can do anything and anyone can write, but I feel like it comes naturally. When talking about writers, one of my fav authors, Shannon Hale, said "Most people have the urgent need to use the creative side of their brain, and for us poor sods it manifests itself in stories". I love writing!!!

I need to write a play or something and perform it for fun with a few friends (using video camera). Once, Sarah and I co-wrote a like 26 page movie script~ Awesome, right:-)?

That is awesome! What was the play about? Plays are awesome, and screenwriting and stuff, but hard I expect because you have to write in the motions of the actors too.

Yeah, that summer was really fun Brianna.... We should do that more and just make them for fun and email back and fourth about it...

What you guys were saying before as in making the paths for your person's life. I think that's totally one of my FAVORITE things about writing. Sometimes if there's something that happened at someone's house or something and I was upset because I wish I could have said something else or something, most of the time I twist it around into my story and make my mind take over it and into what I thought the person was really trying to say or something. :) I love writing... It's making me wanna go write right now, but it's 10:08... PM

SNOWWWWW DAAAY!
I love when, in writing, your characters become so real that they seem to be a part of real life. I love imagining, and at times if I see something I'll be like, "Oh, wow, that's totally something Ashlinn would do, ha ha," or something. And I zone off and make a whole chapter of it in my brain. It's fun.

Right now in my book it's Summer. Some people think it's hard to write about an opposite season than the current season... I do but I also think it's fun because you get to escape even more from what's actually happening... That is also a reason why I like to read, because I can escape from the real world and everything around me... I just have to find a good book and start reading!

I totally agree about the reading thing Jenna!
Here's the long thing I couldn't write on my mom's cell phone:
To get to know your person, this is a good forum to answer questions about your character. I read it from a book, this thing is called "Character Helper":
"Name: __________
Nickname, if any: __________
Kind of being: __________
Age: __________
Gender: __________
Appearance: __________
Occupation - if applicable: __________
Family Members: __________
Pets: __________
Best Friend: __________
Describe his/her room: __________
Way of speaking: __________
Physical characteristics: __________
Items in his/her pockets or backpack or purse: __________
Hobbies: __________
Favorite Sports: __________
Talents, abilities, or powers: __________
Relationships: (how they are with other people) __________
Fears: __________
Faults: __________
Good Points: __________
What they want more then anything else: __________"

Hope you guys enjoyed that! It's *REALLY* helpful.

Awesome Sarah! I have seen something like that before I think but I can't remember where. Another thing to think about with characters is epiphany. That basically means how they change. Characters rarely stay the same for long, the events in their lives and their reactions make them change in some ways. That's one of my favorite things too.

She's so cute... :)

Yes I might be finding help from that list too :) The favorite character I ever made is possibly Genevieve Finch. More often called Vivi. She's for this book... she doesn't come into the story until about Halloween, and right now where I am writing it's early October, so I get to write her soon! I might post about her more in depth soon. But if I say too much it'll give away a lot... you guys don't mind probably though.

Any way easiest for you is fine Jaime. Okay, so last night, I came up with the most wonderful and most ever learning story plot. For a new story of course. The only probably it would have to be about an adult. So I figured out how to make it about a kid, and the adult it is about would be her single mother. Then, I thought of the worst thing ever. You can't really write about celebs. you've never met can you? Besides looking up info on them, I don't think it would be smart to write about who they are and what they act like when you've never ever met them. . . So my wonderful story has just flown out the window. Maybe I could work it out somehow...

Reply
2/2/2011 03:47:10 am

Well, maybe you wouldn't have to use the celeb's name. Like, you can imagine them that way if you want, but you give them a completely different identity in the story. I don't know if that helps. Is this about Navy? Way to be inspyahd!

Feels like tonight *(KINDA)<--sarah's note*
What about now
What about now is a really sweet song. Look it up on youtube for the music video. Makes my mom cry. Muahahahaha!

What's your favorite character that you've read about, that helps you more and more to write your characters better?

Mine are probably Mr. Dixon from Project Mulberry, and.... Luke from Percy Jackson, and maybe like the bad guys in movies and stuff...

Reply
2/13/2011 12:13:15 am

I love Daughtry! My favorite songs of theirs are Life After You, September, Call Your Name (or something like that), and You Don't Belong... but I don't usually use them as writing music. Actually, correction: I use EVERYTHING for writing music. Put the iPod on shuffle and go with it.

That's a really good question Sarah!!! I'm gonna think about it...

2/13/2011 12:16:54 am

Okay, Sarah, for your question, I have a bunch of characters that do that, so bear with me:
ALL the Harry Potter characters. One 1) of the best things about that series is how the characters develop. And they are just so real. To me, especially Dumbledore, Hermione, Remus Lupin... I purple him...
2) Le Comte De Saint-Germain, Machiavelli, and Dee from The Alchemyst series. It's really good. And I purple the first one...
3) David Rain and Zanna from The Last Dragon Chronicles series
4) Ferus Olin from a couple of Star Wars series, and Obi-Wan Kenobi too!!!!! PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE.
5) the 4 girls in The Mother-Daughter Book Club series. These help me when I am doing a lighter, more chick-lit scene, because their personalities are so awesome and quirky and I love those books too.
